Sunset Coast

Sunset Coast

Perth's Sunset Coast - where the sea turns to gold. The Sunset Coast encompasses the glorious coastline of metropolitan Perth from Cottesloe to Two Rocks.

The evening sun dipping spectacularly into the Indian Ocean gives this region its evocative name and it's a sight you can enjoy daily, from any number of picturesque locations. While the beaches and facilities are inviting and the weather is exceptional, it's rarely crowded.

Getting around the Sunset Coast is easy, with an excellent road system that puts great beaches a short drive from the city centre, and the northern limits no more than an hour away. Most places are also accessible by bus or train and extensive walking and cycle trails hug the beaches allowing you to take in both the dazzling views and fresh ocean air.

When it comes to deciding on where to stay all needs are catered for. Whether it's a resort or hotel, self contained apartment, bed and breakfast, caravan park or backpackers hostel, you will find it all. Download the Sunset Coast Holiday Planner now.

BEAUTIFUL BEACHES

During the warm, dry, summer months from December to February, daily temperatures average 31°C, with warm evenings and a little rainfall. Combine those conditions with 50 kilometres of metropolitan coastline, and the Sunset Coast is the ultimate destination for sun worshippers.

Everyone will find a beach here to fall in love with - they're well maintained and open to the public all year round, free of charge. Many have public barbecues and picnic areas, children's playgrounds and fantastic opportunities for swimming, fishing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, deep sea fishing, snorkelling and scuba diving. Perth’s most popular beaches include:

Cottesloe Beach is one of Perth's premier summer locations. Its pristine white beach is great for swimming and it also has beautiful, elevated grassed areas overlooking the beach and a huge choice of cool cafes and restaurants. Scarborough Beach is well served by public transport. Once you're done surfing, sunbathing and swimming spend a relaxing hour or two at one of the many cafés or bars overlooking the ocean.

City Beach is a regular winner of the prestigious 'Best Beach' award in Western Australia. Whether you want to go swimming, jogging or sunbathing this charming and clean spot is heavenly. Trigg Beach is a must for surfers, offering the most consistent surf break, particularly over summer. Some of the better known surf breaks include Waterman's Bay, Mettams and Tripp Point.

If you want to get beneath the waves, there are plenty of fantastic spots for snorkelling and scuba diving including the crystal lagoons, reefs and shipwreck of Marmion Marine Park stretching from Trigg Island to Burns Beach and Mettam’s Pool, a calm and safe spot for families. Adventure seekers will find great windsurfing, kitesurfing at Mullaloo Beach and Pinaroo Point and fishing enthusiasts should head to Hillary's Boat Harbour and Yanchep Lagoon.

Other great beaches include North Beach, Waterman's Beach, Swanbourne Beach, Burns Beach, Floreat Beach, Waterman Beach and Sorrento Beach.

DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

Along the Sunset Coast there's a lot to do near all our brilliant beaches with alfresco cafes and restaurants offering great atmosphere to accompany the great vistas and marina's offering family attractions and great seaside shopping.

Scarborough Beach is currently going through a massive face-lift with a $30 million revitalisation of the area to create a vibrant hub of activity. The new retail and dining precinct along The Esplanade includes Matisse Beach Club and Squire’s Landing serving up craft beer. During summer enjoy live entertainment at the only amphitheatre on the beach in WA.

Hillarys Boat Harbour is abuzz with happy crowds from the heat of summer through to winter's coolest days. Filled with resort style shopping, an excellent selection of cafés and restaurants, family fun park, AQWA and a protected beach perfect for kids. Charter a yacht or boat; join a whale watching cruise, go deep sea fishing, catch the ferry to Rottnest Island or cruise down the coast.

The Marina, Mindarie at the centre of the Mindarie Keys development, covers around 13.5 hectares. Its Mediterranean-style boardwalks lead you to high-quality cafés and restaurants, a sophisticated microbrewery and pub serving sea-fresh fish and chips.

NATURAL TREASURES

Further inland, the Sunset Coast region presents many fascinating opportunities to experience natural Australian environments close to the city. In Joondalup, you'll find walk trails through native bushland where kangaroos and wild birds watch you go by. There's also one of Australia's finest golf courses here, also regularly visited by the local wildlife.

The beautiful bush setting of Yanchep National Park features a koala sanctuary, amazing limestone caves and educational experiences of Aboriginal culture. The beauty of this diverse region is that whatever kind of Western Australian experience you desire, from relaxing on the beach to thrilling action to uplifing nature; you'll be able to find it close by. If you're up for a bit of adventure take a cave tour to experience the spectacular beauty of the park's limestone caves.

At the region's most northern point, the coastline off Two Rocks is scattered with historic shipwrecks and tales of coming to grief on treacherous reefs. These days, the many remaining shipwrecks have become interesting historic artefacts and gripping dive locations. At Wreck Point, for instance, you don't even have to get wet to see a wreck; the remains of 1917's Alex T Brown are still visible offshore, above the high-water mark.
