City of Perth Winter Arts Season 2017

With those cool, crisp mornings setting in, there's no doubt winter is just around the corner. What if we embraced the elements and found the beauty in rain, wind and frost?

Incorporating 16 commissioned art works and more than 150 programmed arts events, the City of Perth's Winter Arts Season is your gateway to doing just that. For three memorable months, discover a host of family and school holiday activities to inspire and delight everyone from young to old.

Plus, there's 60 winter wine and dine offers at more than 30 venues complementing the arts in every corner of the City. Think warming cups of mulled wine, baked Camembert, truffle degustations or long table extravaganzas. Well, what are you waiting for? #EmbracetheElements.

  • Micro Galleries - Sky & Garden

    Perth | Dates: 01 Feb – 30 Sep, 2017
    Located within Micro Galleries at the Art Gallery of WA, the second instalment of the Wesfarmers Collection photographic display will explore the medium of photography with works from iconic Australian artists. This focuses on the idea of landscape and what contemporary explorations of the theme can show us about our place, tastes and traditions.
  • Kevin Ballantine: Photographs 1986-2001

    Crawley | Dates: 29 Apr – 08 Jul, 2017
    Explore Perth of the mid-1980s through to the dawn of the new millennium with photographs from Western Australian artist Kevin Ballantine at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at the University of WA from 29 April - 8 July.
  • HERE&NOW17: New Photography

    Crawley | Dates: 29 Apr – 08 Jul, 2017
    HERE&NOW17: New Photography centres on contemporary Western Australian artists working with, or at the margins of, photography at at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at the University of WA from 29 April - 8 July.
  • The Rise of Sneaker Culture

    Perth | Dates: 13 May – 04 Sep, 2017
    The Art Gallery of WA presents a major international exhibition, The Rise of Sneaker Culture, from 13 May - 4 September bringing iconic sneakers out of the box and into the public realm of the Gallery as part of SNEAKERHEADS Season 2017.
  • Right Wrongs: '67 Referendum - the WA Story

    Perth | Dates: 27 May – 03 Sep, 2017
    Through a unique partnership, Right Wrongs: '67 Referendum explores the significance of this anniversary within the complex history of the ongoing struggle for Aboriginal rights in Western Australia. The exhibition will be held at the State Library of WA from 27 May - 3 September.
  • Boy Racer

    Perth | Dates: 01 Jun – 31 Oct, 2017
    Located at the Grand Lane Light Locker Art Space, Boy Racer runs from June to November. Boy Racer is an investigation into the hypermasculinity of the working class male arena of car culture within Western Australia. This new body of work interrogates the motor vehicle as a symbolic extension of masculinity.
  • If on a Winter's Day

    Perth | Dates: 02 – 30 Jun, 2017
    Throughout June, the Centre for Stories will set up locations around the City to collect short stories from the public. Bring your story with you or sit down at the table and use one of the prompts to share a personal memory or create a short phrase, poem or micro-fiction.
  • _Foundations_2100_

    Perth | Dates: 07 – 29 Jun, 2017
    _Foundations_2100_ is a conceptual seawall and sound artwork that acts as a public memorial to the year 2100 on display at the City Concourse Overpass from 7 - 30 June. This thought-provoking installation by Devon Ward and Kynan Tan is influenced by scientific studies that predict Perth's riverfronts and beaches will flood and disappear by 2100.
  • One Word for Snow

    Perth | Dates: 09 Jun – 09 Jul, 2017
    Capturing the absurdity and joy of snow in Perth, Amy Perejuan-Capone's project One Word For Snow pops up in various locations in the city as part of the 2017 City of Perth Winter Arts Season. For approximately one month, Amy will delight the people of Perth with both the wonder and beauty of snow within City streets and laneways.
  • Cine Vivo's Perth Independent Latino Film Festival

    Perth | Dates: 10 Jun – 26 Aug, 2017
    Embark on a journey of a lifetime as Latin and Australian cultures come together to enjoy food, culture, film, music and photography for Cine Vivo's Perth Independent Latino Film Festival from 10 June - 26 August.
  • Gian Manik and David Charles Collins

    Perth | Dates: 12 Jun – 26 Sep, 2017
    Drawing inspiration from Western Australia's most dramatic landscapes, FORM Gallery presents new works from painter Gian Manik and photographer David Charles Collins from 12 June - 26 September. The artists' resulting solo exhibitions at FORM Gallery premiere the first major bodies work each of them has shown in Perth since leaving their home state.
  • The Likeness

    Crawley | Dates: 13 Jun – 22 Aug, 2017
    Curated by Gemma Weston, The Likeness features works from the Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art, exploring ideas of self-determination and identity at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at the University of WA from 13 June - 22 August.
  • Scarasson

    Perth | Dates: 16 Jun – 03 Aug, 2017
    For six weeks, sound artist Steve Paraskos and the Tura New Music team will set-up studio in an Enex shopfront as part of the City of Perth Winter Arts Season 2017. Enter and immerse yourself in a live exploration of sound and video projection. Each Friday, new themes, sounds and sights will be performed in the space.
  • Tamagotchi Reset and Other Doomsdays

    Northbridge | Dates: 20 Jun – 08 Jul, 2017
    Incorporating a pre-apocalyptic guide to the end of the world, The Blue Room Theatre presents a new spectacular about the end of humanity and our relationship with the world around us. Come on in, the water is warm. And it's getting warmer.
  • The Eisteddfod

    Northbridge | Dates: 22 Jun – 09 Jul, 2017
    Black Swan State Theatre Company presents THE EISTEDDFOD by Lally Katz from 22 June - 9 July 2017 at the Studio Underground, State Theatre Centre of WA. An award-winning hit at the New York International Fringe Festival, The Eisteddfod explores the nostalgic childhood world of orphaned siblings Abalone and his sister, Gerture.
